Man City dealt blow in bid for £200m superstar

Manchester City‘s hopes of tempting Lionel Messi to the Premier League have been dashed, according to MailOnline.

The Barcelona star is reportedly on the verge of signing a new £15.5million-a-season contract with the club, making him the highest paid player in the world ahead of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

The deal, which is expected to be announced shortly after Barcelona’s title deciding La Liga climax against Atletico Madrid this weekend, means City’s chances of sensational move for the Argentinean are slimmer than ever.

The newly-crowned Premier League champions were reported to be preparing a £164million approach for Messi earlier this month, despite the £200million release clause his contract.

But Messi’s decision to remain at Camp Nou could also have further ramifications for City’s title defence next season.

Messi has made it no secret that he would love his close friend and City striker Sergio Aguero to join him at Barcelona in the future, and it is believed his representatives have told the Catalan clients that he needs assurances that he will see world class signings arrive at Camp Nou this summer if he is to sign his seventh contract extension in 11 years.

And a move for Ageuro is believed to be high on the agenda at Barca, although it would only depend on whether they can off-load strikers Alex Sanchez and Pedro, who are both transfer targets for Arsenal.
