New City boss Manuel Pellegrini has become concerned with the manner in which his team have continued to leak goals over pre-season and has become further frustrated with his failure to secure the signing of top defensive target Pepe from Real Madrid.
The Chilean is now set to turn his attentions elsewhere, and has identified Shalke’s Kyriakos Papadopolous and Napoli skipper Paolo Cannavaro as potential signings.
Papadopoulous has been attracting strong interest from Liverpool this summer, and his club Shalke are determined to drive a hard bargain with sporting director Horst Heldt claiming: “There are a lot of clubs to take into account.”
City have splashed out over £90million on attacking talent this summer, bringing in the likes of Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo, and Stevan Jovetic.
However the 2012 Premier League champions still look somewhat short at the back, especially with Matija Nastasic currently out injured and set to miss the start of the season.
Pellegrini is desperate to complete another signing quickly, having watched his side ship eight goals in their last three pre-season games, one of which included a 3-1 defeat to Premier League rivals Arsenal in Helsinki on Saturday.
