Man City edge ahead of Man United in La Liga star hunt

Manchester City have edged ahead of bitter rivals Manchester United in the race for Valencia’s star centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, according to reports from Superdeporte.

The Argentine centre-back looks set to leave Los Che after just one full season in the first-team at the Mestalla – in which he helped them to Champions League qualification – with his agent said to be in England to thrash out a deal.

City and United are thought of as front runners for the commanding defender, and reports claim that the sky blue-clad outfit are, as it stands, at the very front of the queue.

Otamendi’s representatives, Eugenio Lopez and Jorge Mendes, are believed to have spoken to both clubs, and negotiations with City have progressed in a smooth fashion.

Valencia want a release clause-triggering sum of around £36m to be put forward.

Etihad Stadium chiefs are understood to have made Otamendi a priority following the acquisitions of Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph.
