Manchester City fans have slated Nicolas Otamendi after the centre-back gave a positive injury update following the Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Otamendi missed City's win over Crystal Palace but returned to action in a late appearance against Atalanta.

The Argentine told the club: “After the international break I tried to recover from the pain I had on my back. I had a small injury after playing Everton. Then I had to stop to recover, but now I’m available.”

The 31-year-old has taken a lot of stick this season as his form has been an issue in the wake of Aymeric Laporte's injury. Most recently, the defender was bashed for his horror show against Norwich City, where he was responsible for Teemu Pukki's gift of a goal in the 3-2 loss.

It does seem as if fans have not forgiven Otamendi for his mistakes over the past couple of months and are not ready for him to take a spot back in the starting XI. Despite injuries proving to be a problem, City fans would rather see someone else at the back with one supporter jokingly asking for Raheem Sterling instead.

Of late, Fernandinho and Rodri have occupied the centre-back slots, but the latter suffered a hamstring injury against Atalanta, which may force Otamendi into the team sooner than fans would like.

Another supporter has labelled him a "liability".
