Man City must have thought that the return of their inspirational captain and defensive powerhouse Vincent Kompany would be a huge boost ahead of a crucial Premier League tie against Arsenal.
However, the Belgian was more of a hindrance than a help for Manuel Pellegrini’s side in the first half, blatantly bodychecking Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal to concede a penalty, which Santi Cazorla duly converted.
With Yaya Toure away with the Ivory Coast on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations and Sergio Aguero still yet to return to his former razor-sharp self following his own injury, Pellegrini must have thought he could rely on his captain to lead the Citizens to victory and maintain the pressure on league leaders Chelsea.
However, Kompany’s costly mistake may in fact have severely dented City’s title hopes. Will he live to regret it?
