Man City join Man United Chelsea in defender battle

Manchester City are ready to take on bitter rivals Manchester United and Chelsea in the battle for Gerard Pique, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.

The World Cup-winning centre-back is being linked with a shock move away from Barcelona in January amid speculation that he’s no longer seen as a vital figure at the Nou Camp.

United and Chelsea have been mooted as the two sides leading the race for his signature in recent days, but City are now in the running.

Despite snapping up Eliaquim Mangala in a £30m+ deal from Porto over the summer, Manuel Pellegrini is thought to be considering Pique – who is valued at around £25m.

The Sky Blues are hopeful of retaining their Premier League crown, but a shock loss at West Ham has left them in third, six points adrift of early pace setters Chelsea.

Although a key member of Barca’s successes in recent years, Pique’s form has dipped of late which has been a cause of concern for new Catalan boss Luis Enrique.

The defender himself is thought to be keen to stay put, yet his stance may sway if his game time is limited in the New Year.
