The Daily Star reports that Manchester City are leading the way in the race to sign former Chelsea winger Kevin de Bruyne from current club Wolfsburg. The Belgian international has been in incredible form this season, with already 12 assists to his name; leaving him only behind Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi in the creation stakes of Europe’s top five leagues.
However, the same Daily Star piece suggests that the £40million valuation that the Bundesliga club have put on de Bruyne could yet prove a major stumbling block to his Premier League return.
The winger only left Chelsea just over a year ago for £17m, but the German club clearly believe that his form since demands his price tag more than doubles.
De Bruyne left Chelsea because he felt he had not been given sufficient first-team opportunities by manager Jose Mourinho. Although many felt Mourinho had got a deal for the player at the time, his subsequent development has cast doubt on this line of thought.
