Man City lining up Bayern star as major target deal hopes fade

Manchester City are lining up a 2016 move for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara as their hopes of landing major target Paul Pogba fade, according to reports from Goal.

The Citizens were linked with the France international for much of the summer, but a move failed to come to fruition and Barcelona are now being mooted as the favourites to snap him up from Juventus.

City splashed just over £150m on new players during the last window, however director of football Txiki Begiristain is still eager to recruit more talent, and Thiago is already being reportedly considered as an alternative to Pogba.

It’s understood that scouts from the Etihad Stadium outfit have travelled to Germany to watch the ex-Barcelona man in action on more than one occasion this term, opening the door for a big move.

The 24-year-old’s spell in the Bundesliga has been interrupted by injury – he made only 13 appearances last term – but he is thought to be a favourite of manager Pep Guardiola, who is coincidently a long-term City target.

Unlike Pogba, Thiago operates primarily as a No.10.
