Man City look to continue spending spree on Benfica winger

Benfica winger Eduardo Salvio

Manchester City are preparing to continue their summer spending spree by launching a bid for Benfica winger Eduardo Salvio, according to the Independent.

City have exploded into life in the transfer market this week, agreeing deals for Alvardo Negredo from Sevilla, and most recently Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina.

Now it seems new boss Manuel Pellegrini has Argentine star Salvio in his sights, and has launched a £25million bid according to several sources in Portugal.

Pellegrini sees Salvio as the ideal winger to complement another new signing in the form of Spaniard Jesus Navas, who completed a £17million move to the Ethihad from Sevilla earlier in the transfer window.

The former Real Madrid and Malaga boss believes the signing would give City the most exciting array of attacking talent in the Premier League, as they look to regain the title they won in 2012.

The Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira Ferreira is understood to be asking €40m (£34.4m) for the player, who played every game for Benfica last season.

However City are confident a compromise can be reached, and that they will be able to sign the player in time for the start of the new season.

Pellegrini meanwhile has left City’s training camp in South Africa to spend a few days at home in his native Chile, citing a personal issue to attend to.
