Man City open title defence with Newcastle win

Manchester City kicked off the defence of their Premier League title with a 2-0 win against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The Sky Blues ran out narrow title victors last term as they held off Liverpool to maintain a two point advantage, and are widely tipped to be one of the major players in the race for this year’s top prize.

Despite a wobbly showing in the Community Shield last weekend, Manuel Pellegrini’s men were more convincing in the North East, with goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero ensuring that all three points were taken back to the Etihad Stadium.

After a slow start the Spanish schemer opened the scoring following some delightful link-up play with Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian flicked a long Yaya Toure ball into Silva’s path in the 38th minute before the playmaker calmly slotted past Tim Krul.

Newcastle were impressive in spells, but their pressure didn’t pay off and City wrapped up the win in injury time courtesy of Aguero. The Argentine skinned compatriot Fabricio Coloccini before tapping in the rebound from his own shot, which was nicely saved by Krul.

The result, the biggest win of the weekend so far, puts City top of the league, although their position may change tomorrow night as Chelsea take on newly promoted Burnley.
