New City boss Manuel Pellegrini is desperate to add a new centre back to his squad ahead of the new season, after becoming increasingly concerned over the fitness of Matija Nastasic, who is likely to miss the first month of the campaign with an ankle injury.
Pellegrini has watched his defence concede eight goals in their last three pre-season games, enough evidence to suggest the Chilean needs to delve into the transfer market once more.
Portugese international Pepe remains the club’s first choice, although an original offer of £15m was rejected out of hand by Real Madrid.
However City are set to make a new offer of over £20m for the defender, which they hope will be enough to convince Real to part with the 30-year-old.
Reports in Spain claim that City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain has flown to Madrid to try and seal a deal for the centre back, although City do have back up alternatives prepared.
Shalke centre back Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Napoli’s Paolo Cannavaro are also considered to be on Pellegrini’s radar ahead of the new Premier League season.
Speaking after their latest pre season loss to Arsenal in which City conceded three times, Pellegrini said: “We’ll see next week if I can bring in the player I need. We have conceded too many goals and we will have to find ways to fix that.”
