Man City set to beat Man United to star playmaker

Manchester City are closing in on Manchester United target Wesley Sneijder, according to reports from The Sun.

The Dutch playmaker is rumoured to be on the verge of quitting Turkish side Galatasaray, with a January deal on his wish list.

And reports have revealed that his agent, Guido Albers, was in England yesterday to thrash out a deal with City.

Sneijder has been heavily linked with United for a number of years, and Louis van Gaal’s arrival as manager at Old Trafford – the pair worked together in the Netherlands set-up – has only served to intensify the speculation.

Gala are currently gripped by financial turmoil, which has opened the door for a £9m deal for their star man.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini is known to be looking for midfield reinforcements, with Yaya Toure’s imminent exit to represent his nation at the African Cup of Nations a worry.

Frank Lampard – who may stay at the Etihad Stadium until March – is only on loan from New York City FC as well, which could leave the Chilean short on options.
