Man City to battle it out with United for Uruguayan hitman

Manchester City have joined city rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani in the summer transfer window, according to The Sun.

The Citizens – who are almost certain to relinquish their Premier League crown on Sunday if champions-elect Chelsea beat Crystal Palace – are already planning on strengthening their squad for next season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have lacked a spark up front this campaign, relying too heavily on Sergio Aguero while the likes of Edin Dzeko, Stevan Jovetic and Wilfried Bony have failed to find the net consistently, which could see the Etihad outfit make a big-name signing in the striking department.

Cavani has now emerged as a potential target for City, but they would have to make a club-record bid of £50 million to land the Uruguay international.

United are also interested in bringing the PSG frontman to Old Trafford, which may see the two Manchester clubs battle it out for the player once the transfer window opens.
