Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has hailed the recent win over Borussia Monchengladbach as one of the best nights in the club’s history, according to the Daily Mail.
The Citizens have previously been renowned for their struggles in the group stage as they tend to be either eliminated from the group stage or drawn against a European powerhouse in the last 16.
However, last night’s 4-2 victory saw the Etihad outfit win their group for the first time in their history and will now avoid the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the next round.
Having thrown away a 1-0 lead to trail 2-1 at the interval, a Raheem Sterling brace and Wilfried Bony strike secured the victory secured them as easier, in theory at least, tie in the next round.
‘It is one of the best. If we play like we did in the second half we can play against any team’, boasted the 62-year old Chilean tactician.
‘It is better to finish first because you can avoid important teams for one more stage.’
Juventus, who had previously topped the group, were beaten 1-0 by Sevilla which afforded the Manchester club the chance to win Group D on the final matchday.
