Sky Blues chief Manuel Pellegrini is desperate to set up a reunion with the Argentine – whom he managed at Malaga and River Plate – and is ready to spend £4m to secure his signature, despite the centre-half having only moved to the Spanish capital this summer.
Although a move initially looked unlikely, City have now seen their path cleared, with Ateltico having tied up a deal for Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian defender – who was wanted by both Liverpool and Tottenham – is set to add greater competition at the Vicente Calderon, which could allow Demichelis to leave.
The 32-year-old would act as cover for the likes of Matija Nastasic and Vincent Kompany – who is currently injured – and add experience to Pellegrini’s ranks.
Demichelis also brings Champions League know-how having spent eight years with Bayern Munich before joining Malaga in 2011.
The rugged enforcer has 37 Argentinian international caps to his name, with whom he was a runner-up at the 2005 Confederations Cup.
City are also said to be looking at Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala.
