Manchester City will target Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez if Real Madrid beat them to Edinson Cavani's signature in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

City remain the favourites to sign the Uruguayan striker from Napoli at the end of the season with Real Madrid the most serious competition after Paris St Germain indicated they were not in the market for him.

But they have reportedly identified German international Gomez, last season's Champions League top scorer, as their second choice if they miss out on the Napoli hitman.

Cavani, 26, is Serie A's top scorer for the third season running and looks set to leave Naples in a deal that could be worth over £50million to the club.

Napoli are already looking at replacements and have been linked to Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo after it emerged that a swap deal with City involving Edin Dzeko would be very difficult to sew up.

Real Madrid are also being strongly linked to the ex-Palermo forward in Italy, but there appears to be fewer rumours coming out of Spain, which could indicate that Napoli are trying to set up a bidding war with City.

Cavani's father did recently tell Marca TV, however, that he believed there was a 50 per cent chance of his son making the move to the Bernabeu Stadium.

Roberto Mancini has coveted the Uruguayan for almost two years, having seen him almost single-handedly destroy City's Champions League hopes last season.

City chief Ferran Soriano recently suggested that the club were looking to add three of four established world class players to Mancini's squad for next season.
