Manchester City fans hit back at Sterling critics following England win over Sweden

If anyone in the England squad can cope with intense criticism, it is Raheem Sterling.

The Manchester City star has been hounded numerous times over the course of the season for trivial off-the-pitch moments, as well as his performances on the field.

On Saturday, the 23-year-old, who is valued at £81m by Transfermarkt, started as part of Gareth Southgate’s XI against Sweden in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The Premier League champion has played in all but one of the nation’s tournament matches as he, as well as a handful of other stars, were rested for the dead rubber against Belgium in the group stage.

Against Sweden, the attack-minded player saw plenty of the ball and his pace certainly caused moments of concern for England’s opponents.

However, he came under criticism from fans for failing to bury two clear attempts on goal after hesitating when inside the box.

While a huge number of England supporters expressed frustration on Twitter, some City fans defended their man.
