The Belgian international has been a major hit since his 2012 move to White Hart Lane from Ajax, and even earned a spot in the Premier League’s team of the season at the end of his debut campaign.
He has since continued to play well for the Lilywhites, but there have been slight mumblings of discontent coming from the player of late.
Due to a number of injuries Vertonghen was forced to play some time earlier this term on the left hand side of the backline, much to his frustration.
It is also rumoured that missing out on Champions League football could add to his disgruntlement, which has alerted City.
Despite their excellent form this term, Manuel Pellegrini’s men have looked shaky at centre-back, with the likes of Matija Nastasic and Martin Demichelis struggling to match the form of Vincent Kompany.
The Chilean is keen to address this issue during the next transfer window, and sees an all-Belgian central duo as a formidable pairing.
The two have played together on numerous occasions at international level, and it would appear that Vertonghen’s skill on the ball and pace may compliment Kompany’s sheer presence.
Spurs are unlikely to be willing to sell, but City’s financial muscle may open up the possibility of a shock deal.
