Manchester City should try to land Julian Weigl from Borussia Dortmund after they failed to sign Chelsea-bound Jorginho.
For months it seemed that Jorginho was destined for the Etihad Stadium following widespread reports of the club’s interest in the Napoli midfielder.
However, in a shock turn of events, the 26-year-old signed a five-year contract with Chelsea after Maurizio Sarri was confirmed as the Blues’ new manager.
This means that City manager Pep Guardiola and his staff will have to go back to the drawing board.
One man who has previously been linked to the Premier League champions is Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl.
The 22-year-old, who has been at the German club since 2015, plays in a similar style to Jorginho.
The young midfielder, who is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, has the skill and ability to thrive in a Guardiola team, and he would be even better thatn Jorginho would have been under Pep’s tutelage.
Despite his slight frame, Weigl has strength on the ball and he also possesses a football intelligence beyond his years.
The German can control the tempo of the game and orchestrate moves from the middle of the park.
A negative in Weigl’s game is that he does not have much pace, but with plenty of City’s other midfielders having quick feet, it would not be a huge miss.
