Manchester City’s hopes of luring Fred to the Etihad Stadium have been dealt a blow after Fluminense denied claims that the striker will leave this summer.
The Citizens have been linked with the Brazilian star over the course of the last few weeks, with new manager Manuel Pellegrini keen to strengthen his striking options.
After allowing Carlos Tevez to join Juventus, City currently have just two recognised centre-forwards – Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko – and Fred is believed to be seen as the ideal man to lead the line.
The 29-year-old netted two goals during the Confederations Cup final, taking his tally to the tournament to five, making him one of the stand-out performers.
But, he is unlikely to be joining City, or any big European club, after Fluminense’s director of football, Rodrigo Caetano, denied claims he will be leaving soon.
“Fred is under contract with Fluminense,” he is quoted by Sky Sports via ESPN Brazil.
“He is very happy at the club and we are very satisfied with him.”
The player himself has admitted that he could be persuaded to move, but that he would only do so for a “great” offer.
Fred has already spent one stint in European football with Lyon, but failed to settle, despite some strong performances, before returning to his homeland in 2009.
