Manchester City to beat Manchester United in transfer race

Porto defender Eliaquim MangalaManchester City are ready to trigger the £28m clause in Eliaquim Mangala’s contract with Porto to take him to the Etihad Stadium, according to reports from The Express.

The French defender has been a target for multiple Premier League clubs this summer, with Manchester United believed to leading the race for his signature.

But, the Sky Blues’ defensive crisis has seen Manuel Pellegrini step up his transfer plans.

The Chilean was forced to use midfielder Javi Garcia as an emergency centre-back during last weekend’s shock defeat at Cardiff, due to injuries to first choice partnership Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic.

In a bid to remedy his problems, Pellagrini is ready to beat United to Mangala’s signature by activating his £38m release clause.

Reports suggest that discussions between the two parties have already begun, and City are willing to quadruple the 22-year-old’s salary to convince him to leave Portugal.

Although Mangala is keen to move to the Premier League, he will seek assurances from Pellegrini regarding his chances of regular playing time before penning any contract offered.

City are also keen on Atletico Madrid defender Martin Demichelis.

The Argentine only switched to the Spanish capital this summer, but is said to be willing to move on already to reunited with Pellegrini – who he played under last season at Malaga.
