Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini is set to take charge at the Etihad Stadium soon, and is said to have major plans in place as he looks to overhaul City’s squad.
Di Maria is thought to be one of his main targets, and the ex-Malaga coach is willing to spend a large chunk of his transfer budget in order to conclude a deal swiftly.
Real are in no rush to sell the Argentine, but a sizable offer could tempt them to do so as they prepare their own summer moves for Tottenham and Liverpool’s Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez.
Di Maria has been solid, if unspectacular, at the Bernabeu since his switch from Benfica in 2010, but is still regarded as an important first-team player.
Pellegrini believes that a bid of around £30m will be enough to conclude a deal and keep the 25-year-old out of the clutches of Manchester United, who are also keen.
City have been very active in the transfer market already, with deals for Jesus Navas and Fernandinho – for a combined £50m – already having been agreed.
They are also tracking Malaga playmaker Isco, who could be keen to follow Pellegrini to Manchester.
Manchester City were the lowest scorers in the top four last season. Could Di Maria provide the spark they need?
