The Spanish giants are believed to have made a right-sided defender one of their top targets ahead of the winter window, and have been heavily linked with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta of late.
But now, Zabaleta has emerged as a candidate for a move, with Carlo Ancelotti said to have been impressed by the Argentine’s consistent displays.
The 28-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest full-backs in recent seasons, with his combative performances helping City to Champions League qualification and title glory in 2011.
Real see him as the ideal man to aid their pursuit of the Spanish title, and somebody that can complement the defensive abilities of Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Pepe at the Bernabeu.
City are unlikely to be open to the idea of selling Zabaleta, but if the player himself pushes for a move they may be unable to resist a respectable offer.
Los Blanco have also been linked with a move for Sergio Aguero as they plot to sign a world-class striker to partner Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.
