After a 4-0 thumping in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago, Manchester City’s clash with Barcelona yesterday evening always looked set to be a bit of a classic.
And the Etihad Stadium affair undoubtedly delivered, with Pep Guardiola’s boys claiming their first ever competitive win over the Spanish champions after losing their prior five meetings.
They appeared to be on course for another defeat when Lionel Messi converted a typical Barcelona attack early on, which saw Luis Suarez, Neymar and the Ballon d’Or winner completely bamboozle the City defence on the break.
But the Citizens responded just 18 minutes later through Ilkay Gundogan, who also netted the third in a 3-1 win – with Kevin de Bruyne providing the second via a rasping free kick.
