Gotze was Pep Guardiola’s first signing as Munich manager when he made the controversial switch from rivals Borussia Dortmund to the Allianz Arena. After missing the Champions League final in what would have been his final game for his previous employers against the club he has now joined, Gotze must be hungry to get a chance at playing on the grandest stage of all this time round. Yet at the age of 21, one must recognise that this is just the start of what is likely to be an illustrious career.
The scary thing for Manchester City is that most of Bayern Munich’s starting XI could have been included on this list. Gotze has been picked because he is the player that will buy into the classic Barcelona philosophy that Guardiola is looking to implement in Germany. Manchester City have had previous meetings with Gotze before and should have an effective plan in place to stop him doing the damage he and several of his teammates did to them with Borussia Dortmund last season.
The probability is that City and Bayern will be battling it out for top place in this group, but if stars like Gotze can turn on the magic there will only be one winner regardless of how Manuel Pellegrini sets his team up.
