Manchester United and Tottenham have both suffered a set-back in their respective pursuits of Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao, with the full-back having agreed to stay at Real Madrid, according to reports from The Sun.
The Premier League duo were both heavily linked with the Portuguese ace over the summer, with the Red Devils believed to have been close to tying up a loan deal for his signature.
Despite missing out on an arrangement, the pair have remained interested in the left-side defender, and have both been linked with fresh offers for his services in the New Year.
However, Coentrao is now ready to stay at the Bernabeu, and fight for his place.
The ex-Benfica man has spent the majority of the opening months of the season warming Carlo Ancelotti’s bench, with Marcelo having been the first choice left-back at the club.
But, Coentrao is believed to have agreed a new contract with the club, and is thought to be happy with his current situation.
The revelation is likely to end Spurs and United’s interest in the player, although if there are signs of discontent a loan deal could be pursued or an end of season swoop considered.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are believed to be closing in on a move for Real striker Alvaro Morata, who may join them for the final six months of the season.
