Just a few days after being crowned as the PFA Player of the Year, Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk was far from his best during his side's 3-0 Champions League semi-final first leg defeat against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

The Netherlands international has enjoyed a brilliant season at the back for the Merseyside outfit, but his latest display didn't go unnoticed by fans of rivals Manchester United on Twitter.

The usually imperious 27-year-old was partially at fault for the Spanish giants' first two goals on the night, and struggled to deal with the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at points during the encounter.

In truth the usually composed Dutchman was anything but on occasions, even at one stage calling for his teammates to come and help him when Messi was in possession on the wing.

There has been a lot of talk about Van Dijk potentially being the best defender in the world right now and in Premier League history – which would put him ahead of the likes of former Red Devils Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic – and that was something United supporters were quick to pick up on with their comments.

While one said "VVD looks like he needs some lessons on defending from Vidic, Ferdinand and Terry", another said "Virgil van Dijk, ladies and gentlemen, the "best defender in the world".
