Tottenham Hotspur recently confirmed that they have exercised an extension clause in Toby Alderweireld’s contract that sees his deal with the club extended until 2020.
However, ESPN have since reported that triggering this extension option has also activated a £25 million release clause in the Belgian centre-back’s contract.
Despite the lengthened contract, clubs may now be more likely than ever to launch a bid for the 29-year-old given that he is available at such an affordable price.

The defender has been in and out of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans throughout this season, but he remains one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre-backs.
Plenty of Spurs’ rival top flight outfits may be considering making a move to sign Alderweireld this January, but Manchester United would be wise to act fast and ensure that they can land the 84-cap Belgium international for themselves.
The Red Devils were linked with Alderweireld throughout the summer but a transfer ultimately failed to come to fruition. This new release clause could offer the Old Trafford club a second chance at securing his services though.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should take up his predecessor Jose Mourinho’s pursuit of the Spurs man as United are still in dire need of defensive additions. Alderweireld’s authority, calmness and experience would quickly make him a key asset at Old Trafford and his presence could help get the best out of the likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot.
For £25 million, even as a relatively short-term solution, Alderweireld would be a bargain.
