The England international has emerged as a major target for the Red Devils in recent times, with Louis van Gaal thought to be keen to bring him in as he plots to add a genuine right-back to his ranks after being forced to use Antonio Valencia in the role for much of the season.
With just over a year remaining on his contract, Southampton are attempting to thrash out a new deal, but Ronald Koeman has already confessed that keeping his £25m-rated man at St Mary’s may be tricky.
And despite Spurs also having their eye on the 24-year-old, Clyne is desperate to join United.
A source close to the situation confirmed this to Goal, but revealed that a deal is not yet done:
“The player has made it known that United are his first choice, the deal is not done yet but it is a clear indication of his thinking.”
Clyne has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season, holding down a spot at the Saints’ main right-sided defender while also making his England bow.
