£50m clause holding back Man United deal

Manchester United may have to slash the proposed £50m release clause in their new deal for David de Gea to keep the star goalkeeper at Old Trafford, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Spain international has been, arguably, the Red Devils’ player of the season so far, with his heroics between the sticks having helped the club to gain vital points in their pursuit of a top four finish.

However, with just under 18 months on his contract, De Gea’s future is far from clear.

Real Madrid are believed to be monitoring the situation, which has forced United to press ahead with negotiations to extend the 24-year-old’s stay at the Theatre of Dreams.

Louis van Gaal’s side are desperate to keep their man and have even offered him a salary in the region of £200,000-per-week for four years, as well as a release clause.

But, the £50m figure United are insisting on is a stumbling block, with De Gea’s representatives seeking a number on the region of half of that.
