Manchester United are extensively busy in their pursuit of Paul Pogba and might even succeed. But they are also reportedly chasing Fabinho, the Brazilian right-back.
Jose Mourinho has set his sights on a move for the 22-year-old and if rumours to be believed, Monaco are willing to sell him and could see a bid of £22million come from Old Trafford in the very near future.
Fabinho started his career from Rio Ave FC and is currently at Monaco, after spending loan spells at R. M. Castilla and Monaco. In Castilla, Fabinho impressed enough to receive a call-up to Real’s first-team under Mourinho. On his debut he replaced Fábio Coentrão even clinched one assist.
After an impressive two-year loan deal at Monaco, Fabinho joined the club on a permanent basis, contracted until 2019 for a reported fee of €6million.
The Brazilian stands at 6 feet 2 inches, which is tall for a right-back. Being an attack-minded defender who loves to get forward and create chances, Fabinho is able to cover a lot of ground as he fulfils his defensive duties too.
Fabinho was one of the best performing right-backs last season, contributing eight goals and five assists in his 47 appearances for Monaco. According to Whoscored.com, Fabinho managed 3.2 tackles per game and managed 2.2 interceptions per game in Ligue 1.
Matteo Darmian is the only specialist right-back currently at Old Trafford. The Italian delivered average performances last season, and the potential transfer of Fabinho might help Mourinho in strengthen the position and could challenge the Italian for a first team spot. The transfer could even make Antonio Valencia free to shoulder the responsibilities at his preferred right-wing position.
The transfer won’t be much of a hassle and time wasting as the agent representing the player is same man as Mourinho’s, Jorge Mendes.
