Jesse Lingard has been called up to Gareth Southgate's Nations League squad despite having a poor season for Manchester United.

This prompted Angel Gomes - a player who is clearly influenced by Lingard and by the way he broke into the Manchester United side under Louis Van Gaal - to respond.

Gomes will be aspiring to be like Lingard and force himself into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans next season.

Lingard is in the England side to face the Netherlands on the 6th of June, but in truth has had a bad season for the Red Devils and is probably only included because Ruben Loftus-Cheek suffered a horrendous injury in Boston last-week.

If he is given the chance to play, though, this could be the 26-year-old's opportunity to end his season in a positive way and look to build some momentum for what is likely to be a make-or-break season for the Warrington-born-man.

He will be turning 27 in December, a peak year for an outfield player, but this season was a poor one - he only scored five goals and registered four assists in 36 appearances.

In the previous campaign he scored 13 and registered seven assists in 48 appearances.

He will have to improve on this season or he could find his time at Old Trafford brought to an abrupt halt.
