Are we reading too much in to this Man United transfer rumour?

Something we have learnt this week – Thomas Muller loves Louis Van Gaal.

Muller says the relationship he has with the Dutch manager “goes beyond that of a player and a coach.” So, of course, Manchester United fans have jumped the gun and linked Muller with an illustrious move to Manchester. Could it happen?

Well, it could. Louis Van Gaal’s previous relationships have served him well – in the case of Memphis Depay for example. Liverpool were reportedly monitoring Depay for 18 months, but once Louis came calling, it was game over.

Muller has two years left on his Bayern contract, which he was quick to mention after praising Van Gaal. But, can we trust a footballer’s word? We won’t be taking this as gospel just yet…

Muller is just another on a long list of players to be linked with a move to Old Trafford already ahead of the summer transfer window. He joins the likes of Gundogan, Hummels, Ronaldo, Bale, Clyne and Alves. If rumours are anything to go by, Van Gaal will be creating a whole new squad. But the Muller rumour is the only one that has any sort of substance to it – and by that I mean there is mention of the team by the player. That is the height of it.

Whether Muller decides to make the switch to England to join his old boss remains to be seen. But, Louis Van Gaal is clearly looking to get in early with his business. You can only assume he will have the guts of his new players – depending on how many he decides to sign – before pre-season.

This seems more evident now that he could be losing the likes of Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria to the Copa America while the pre-season takes place. And that is a real shame, as Di Maria would massively benefit from a good run of games before a new Premier League campaign for United.

Of course Muller would be a fantastic signing, there’s no doubt. But can we really create a story, and a transfer over something so simple? And really, Muller should not be their first priority.

Defence needs to be looked at first!
