Arsenal targeted three Man Utd players ahead of Premier League clash

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger tried to sign THREE Manchester United players over the summer, according to the Metro.

The titans will collide this weekend, with the Red Devils sitting atop the Premier League summit and Wenger’s side in fourth position.

The Gunners boss has been criticised for his inactivity in the transfer market, signing only Petr Cech from Chelsea this summer. He was the only manager in Europe’s top five leagues not to bring in a senior outfield player during the close season.

Now, reports suggest he was keen on signing Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin before they completed their Old Trafford switches, as well as Chris Smalling.

Martial has thrilled fans since joining from Monaco in a £36.6m deal on deadline day after previous links with the North London side, while Schneiderlin was thought to be a long term target of Arsenal’s.

All three players could form the spine of the team in Sunday’s fixture – with questions likely to be raised should the Gunners lose.

Arsenal lost to Olympiakos during their most recent outing, severely denting their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
