Robbie Savage believes that Jack Grealish is currently outperforming three Manchester United stars, per BBC 606 (February 23, 35:24).
The Aston Villa captain has been in fine form thus far this season as Dean Smith’s men attempt to avoid relegation to the Championship, scoring seven goals and registering six assists.
Villa are currently 17th in the Premier League table, ahead of Monday’s clash between West Ham United and Liverpool.
Reports have linked Grealish with a potential summer move to United and Savage believes that he is performing far better than three attacking midfield options that United currently have: Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, and Andreas Pereira.
He said: “But you know, with Jack Grealish people say Pereira’s had it hard to come into a struggling team.
“Well look at Jack Grealish who’s the same age as Pereira (they’re both 24).
“His performances for Villa in a struggling team have been head and shoulders above Lingard, above Mata, and above Pereira.”
The stats bear this out.
Thus far this season, Grealish has made 25 appearances and, in addition to his goals and assists, he has averaged 2.2 shots per game, 2.8 key passes and 2.3 dribbles, per WhoScored.
The United trio have scored one goal between them and provided five assists – Lingard hasn’t contributed in either category.
Mata averages 0.6 shots per game, while Lingard has one, and Pereira has 1.6. Pereira also has the highest key passes of the trio with 1.6, as well as the highest dribbles with 0.8 but lags significantly behind the Villa man in both statistics.
Bringing Grealish into the club would be a huge upgrade on all three but, of course, his future may well be tied to Villa’s survival.
They are currently one point ahead of West Ham with 11 games of the season remaining; those in the corridors of power at Old Trafford may be hoping that lead slips between now and May.
