Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that midfield maestro, Angel di Maria, only played in the 3-0 defeat of Cambridge in the FA Cup to help the player take his mind off an attempted home burglary. Di Maria was believed to be shook up after the incident with van Gaal gifting the player his wish to play, in spite of his better judgement.
The Daily mail quoted the Dutch manager as saying:
‘I spoke with him and he wanted to play against Cambridge United and I played him. I believe in the total human being principle, so his environment is also important. He was worried about his wife and child.’
Di Maria was at home with his family in Cheshire last Saturday night when burglars made an attempt to break into their new home, according the above reports in the Daily Mail. However, the offenders were left empty-handed after failing to break through the patio door and into the former Real Madrid man’s property.
Van Gaal revealed in the same Daily Mail report that he was happy with both his decision to start di Maria and the Argentine’s performance. The Manchester United manager added that this display is likely to mean that di Maria keeps his place for Sunday’s away trip to West Ham.
