Colombian linked with Manchester United move

Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao

Manchester United are now leading the race to sign Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao, according to the Independent.

The 27-year-old Colombia international hitman, who has enjoyed another prolific campaign with 22 league goals in just 26 La Liga games to date for Atletico, has been linked with a host of clubs in the past 12 months.

Chelsea were thought to be closing in on a 50 million euros deal following reports Blues owner Roman Abramovich had been in negotiations with the Spanish outfit.

However, Spanish newspaper Marca is reporting that United have stolen a march on their rivals by making a down payment for Falcao to seal a switch to Old Trafford this summer.

United have already done business with Atletico Madrid in the past, with a 20 million euros deal agreed in summer 2011 to take goalkeeper David De Gea to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. Therefore it is feasible that the Spanish outfit would prefer to sell to a trusted buyer.

But the fact United already have Javier Hernandez, Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck vying for striker berths at the moment suggests one of those could be offloaded to make way for Falcao’s arrival, or else the reports in Marca are wide of the mark.
