The level of criticism being fired towards Manchester United seems a little silly so far this season. After all, Louis van Gaal’s men only need to match PSV Eindhoven’s result in their last Champions League match this evening to reach the last 16 and currently sit inside the top four in the Premier League. All plain sailing, it would seem.
However, the way in which LVG sets his side out is attracting a lot of sneers, with the Dutchman’s football far more attritional than attractive. We all knew from struggling to stay awake for a full 90 minutes of United ‘action’ that this team is a little dull to watch, but the stats now back that up.

United currently average the greatest level of possession in the entire Premier League, but they’re last in terms of playing the ball forward and first in playing it backwards and using it inside their own half. You could say it’s death by football, but ranking 15th for chances created and eighth for goals scored is hardly inspiring.
Is this Van Gaal’s much talked about “philosophy”?
