Could he be the answer to Manchester United’s defensive woes?

Ezequiel GarayEzequiel Garay has been a mainstay in the Benfica team since 2011 and the once Real Madrid centre back has already established himself as one of the world’s best centre backs.

While he only made a handful of appearances at Real across his three-season spell there, Manuel Pellegrini is proof that failing to succeed at Los Blancos rarely holds you back.

Garay helped Benfica in their run to the Europa League final and ensured they finished runners-up to Porto in the League. The 26-year-old who initially started out at Newell’s Old Boys has also managed to force his way into the Argentinian national team.

The defender is being billed as a long term successor to Nemanja Vidic for Manchester United as he is extremely efficient at marshalling the back four and sweeping up any potential dangers.

The defender has been tracked by the Red Devils for some time as they look to establish a partner for Phil Jones for the foreseeable future at Manchester United.

Garay has also illustrated his ability to be a goalscoring threat in particular at set pieces and this attacking threat as well as his confidence in set piece situations in his own defensive area would make him a real asset to any side.

Sir Alex Ferguson was long term admirer of the 6ft 4 defender and David Moyes is set to follow up this interest and make a move for the centre back.
