It was the sensation of August’s deadline day. Manchester United, rebuffed all summer long by big transfer targets, paid over the odds for a teenage striker who had scored a couple of goals for Monaco.
An exciting prospect, Martial was surely a good buy for a giant of the Premier League like Manchester United, but for the reported €80m it was the size of the fee rather than the acquisition of the young talent that was in question.
It was always speculated, however, that the quoted figure of €80m included some fairly reasonable add-on clauses – such as the teenage sensation winning the Ballon d’Or.
Well, according to French daily newspaper Le Figaro, who themselves are crediting the leak to the blog footballleaks2015, this is indeed true. Today they are reporting that the contract between United and Monaco has been leaked, and not only does it appear to clarify the details of the transfer fee, but it also reveals AS Monaco’s bank details!
The leak allegedly confirms that United paid an initial €50m (still an astronomical fee for a teenager who has yet to prove himself on the big stage) but that there will be an extra €30m in add-ons, €10m if Martial scores 25 goals for the Red Devils, €10m if he plays 25 times for France, and €10m if he appears on the list of nominees for the Ballon d’Or whilst he is a Manchester United player.
The alleged leak of the contract between the two clubs also specifies that Monaco would be in for a fairly large cut of any potential transfer fee of over €60m.
Clearly United were so stuck for another attacking player at the end of the summer window that they’ve agreed to what is potentially a very lucrative deal for the Ligue 1 club.
