“Do not expect any signings,” warns United boss

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal does not expect to make any big signings in the January transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Despite spending in excess of £150 million in the summer in a major overhaul of the squad – including £59.7 million on Argentinian Angel di Maria, £30 million on young England full back Luke Shaw and a £20 million loan deal for Colombian hitman Radamel Falcao – many expected the Red Devils to continue their spending spree in the new year, with Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels both heavily linked with moves to the Old Trafford club.

However, van Gaal has insisted that he will adopt a more frugal approach – for the time being, at least – with big-name signings in the next few weeks unlikely.

“I don’t think that we shall be very active as not many players of a certain level are available,” said the Dutchman.

“I have said that when we buy a player he has to be better than the players that are playing now and that is a difficult job.”

Manchester United have made one signing so far in the January transfer window, bringing in former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer as competition for current United no.1 David de Gea.
