Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij has poured cold water over suggestion he was keen to join Manchester United last summer, according to the Daily Star.
The 23-year old had been linked with the Red Devils when Louis van Gaal initially took over from David Moyes, having worked with the Dutchman at the 2014 World Cup.
The defender played every minute of every game as van Gaal guided the Dutch side to third place at the tournament in Brazil, and the tactician was said to be keen on reuniting.
He instead joined Serie A giants Lazio, and has revealed ‘people often associate me with Manchester United because Louis van Gaal is there, but I want to win with Lazio.’
‘All the Dutch players seem to be linked with them at the moment, but there was never anything in it.’
The Red Devils are currently after defensive cover after the injury to Luke Shaw and persistent rumours of Marcos Rojo leaving the club, and have been linked with another Dutch defender in Bruno Martins Indi.
