England international set for shock Man United return

Manchester United have told Aston Villa to take up the £7m option to make Tom Cleverley’s loan move a permanent one by the end of the day or he will be recalled to Old Trafford, which the club have declined, according to BBC Sport’s David Ornstein.

The England international midfielder joined the Villains over the summer in a deadline-beating loan deal in a bid to get his ailing career back on track after a difficult period at Old Trafford under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

Although he has not pulled up any trees in the Midlands, Cleverley has been quietly impressive when called upon by Paul Lambert.

But Ornstein has now made this revelation:

Ornstein also claims that the request has been rejected and that a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer is now an option.

There were suggestions early on that Villa would look to keep the United man, but the Red Devils are playing hardball in order to get a deal over the line before tonight’s cut-off point.

They are understood to have threatened Villa with a re-call for their man unless the £7m is paid up, which may force their hand given the club’s relegation battle woes even though it’s indicated that they will not do so.
