Ex-Man United assistant coach slams Moyes

Former Manchester United assistant chief Rene Meulensteen believes that with a better manager than David Moyes his old club would be in the Premier League title battle.

The Dutchman left Old Trafford in 2013 after working under Sir Alex Ferguson for six years, and has since managed Anzhi Makhachkala and Fulham for brief periods.

Moyes was relieved of his duties with the Red Devils last week after a disastrous campaign that has seen the club slip from champions to a side that will not be in next term’s Champions League.

Meulensteen believes that had United appointed a coach with a proven top level pedigree such as such as Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho – who have been linked with the job in recent days – they would be battling Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City for the title rather than scrapping for Europa League qualification:

“This group were last year’s champions with a difference of 11 points. A manager like Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola would have United near the top, I’m sure.” He is quoted by Goal.

“They are going to have to build something again. But that takes time and needs patience. In my view, it is more likely that the Glazers want to challenge for trophies again as soon as possible.”
