Ex-Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku posts on Instagram after racist abuse

Romelu Lukaku is the latest player to suffer racial abuse following a spate of incidents in England involving former Manchester United teammates Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford.

The Belgium international, who joined from Old Trafford this summer, was playing his second game for Antonio Conte’s side when the home fans directed monkey chants toward him.

Last season, Everton’s Moise Kean suffered similar abuse against Cagliari when ex-Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri and defender Leonardo Bonucci bewilderingly appeared to sympathise with the aggressors and suggest that Kean should take some of the blame. Genuinely shocking, and not-so-subtle evidence of the shameful pandemic footballers of ethnic origins face in the Serie A and below.

Blaise Matuidi of Juventus and Sulley Muntari were also attacked by Caligari fans, but Serie A decided not to sanction the club and instead banned Muntari, who left the pitch in protest in 2017 when playing for Pescara.

Pogba and Rashford were subjected to online discrimination after failing to convert penalties against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace, respectively, and have since taken to social media to denounce the behaviour of those responsible.
