Manchester United teenager Mason Greenwood made his second Premier League appearance for the club when he came off of the substitutes' bench to replace Romelu Lukaku against West Ham United on Saturday.

Both of the 17-year-old's other outings in all competitions for the Red Devils came last month against Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal respectively, but he finally made his bow at Old Trafford at the weekend.

The attacker has been in brilliant goalscoring form for the U18s, so it is no surprise that he is starting to be given minutes in the first team by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – a great believer in youth.

While the excitement among the United faithful may be building for Greenwood, one fan on their Reddit channel believes the youngster would actually benefit from a loan move to Germany next term. But is he right?

The positives

The main one is pretty obvious – seeing how well other players have done following similar moves.

Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson are both currently plying their trade in the Bundesliga and doing really well in a less intense league, with the former now an England international despite being just 18 years of age.

It is clearly a division where young players are given a chance and have the opportunity to showcase their abilities on a weekly basis, and someone like Greenwood would get the amount of starts and minutes in general that the needs to continue his development.

The negatives

The main one is United not having an exciting youngster who could potentially raise spirits within the club, if needed, for either the first-half of the campaign or the full season.

Supporters of any club will love seeing a teenager like Greenwood come through, and they will generally be more patient with them than they perhaps would be with a more senior player signed from another club.

Sending him away would be a blow in the short-term in that respect, but United could ultimately benefit in the long-term given he will surely struggle to be a regular starter for the Red Devils in 2019/20.

Verdict

In my opinion, United should bite the bullet and give Greenwood the guaranteed minutes he needs.

When you see how well Sancho and Nelson have done in Germany – and what it must have done for their confidence as players – then it is a no-brainer to give him a different football experience in the Bundesliga.

United will ultimately benefit and could even have a full England international on their hands this time next season as a result of the move.
