Fears Man United playmaker will end career early

Manchester United playmaker Nick Powell is feared to be on the verge of giving up football, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The 22-year old was signed from Crewe for £4m three years ago, but has struggled to impose himself on first-team proceedings at Old Trafford.

A serious knee injury curtailed his progress, but a loan spell with Leicester City was cut short last season amid questions surrounding his attitude and commitment to the game.

Nigel Pearson, in charge of the Foxes at the time, was rumoured to disappointed with his general demeanour, and his attitude reportedly hasn’t changed since his return.

He is reported to be showing little appetite for the game, and his contract is due to expire next year with little chance of extending his stay.

He was signed in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season with the club, but the former England under-21 has only been able to make seven appearances in his three years.

Previously, the promising playmaker had impressed on loan at Wigan and scored a spectacular strike at Wembley in the 2012 League Two play-off final while at Crewe.
