Paul Pogba is the man of the moment and the mainstream media are insisting that Manchester United are close to pulling off a world-record £105million deal for the midfielder.

The Red Devils may be one of the world's biggest clubs, but can they really draw the world's new favourite player?

Here are five reasons to doubt they can seal the signing of the summer...

Never go back

Paul Pogba

Pogba spent three years at United, arriving from Le Havre in 2009 as a trainee - but he did not make the grade.

After three appearances as a sub, the Red Devils lost faith and he went to Juventus in one of the most outrageous free transfers of all time.

The old adage says "never go back" and, after being dropped so unceremoniously back in 2012, you have to question whether the France star would have them anywhere near the top of his list.

The top players need to be playing at the top level and, whichever way you paint it, United are not in the Champions League and that is likely to be a huge obstacle for the deal.

Pogba, 23, is too big to be playing in the Europa League without a cast-iron guarantee United will finish in the top four - and, with the amount of quality in the Premier League this season, they just cannot give him that.

And for £105m they are hardly going to insert a release clause in his contract.

It's a step down

Juventus have won the Serie A title for five years straight and are beginning to get a grip on the Champions League with a final and semi-final in the last three seasons.

Why would Pogba trade all that in for a club who hasn't even had a settled manager for the past three years and have only an FA Cup to their name since Alex Ferguson retired?

Quality of players

DepayDown

At Juve, Pogba is playing alongside undeniable world-class talent like captain Gianluigi Buffon, defender Giorgio Chiellini, Miralem Pjanic as well as Sami Khedira in midfield and Mario Mandzukic up front.

He also plays alongside top up-and-coming prospects like Paulo Dybala, Leonardo Bonucci and Simone Zaza.

United's big names like Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ander Herrera, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial are either in the twilight of their careers or struggling for form.

Real Madrid's record

Bale and Ronaldo

Real Madrid have held the world transfer record since 2000, when they signed Luis Figo from hated rivals Barcelona for £37m.

They have broken their own milestone a number of times with Zinedine Zidane (£46m), Kaka (£56m) Cristiano Ronaldo (£80m) and Gareth Bale £86m).

It is a huge badge of honour to them and sets them apart as the world's richest football club they are not likely to let it go to a team that are not even in the Champions League.

And don't count out United's rivals City either!
