Over the past four years, no club in England has spent more money than Manchester United, yet Jose Mourinho's squad is still lacking in a number of areas.

Despite their recent run of twelve Premier League games unbeaten, the damage to the Red Devils' title aspirations has already occurred and in a big way.

With finances seemingly available, Mourinho, in theory, can make Man United a powerhouse of English and European football once again. The Portuguese manager is currently making enormous strides at Old Trafford, but he cannot rest on his laurels at the helm of the Manchester giants.

It's undeniable that Mourinho needs to expand the quality of his squad, but individual performers must first be sold this January. Many clubs fighting relegation or those with the riches of the Chinese Super League's elite would surely be interested in pursuing some of United's unwanted stars.

So here’s a rundown of FIVE players Mourinho should look to axe in the coming month.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

German midfielder Schweinsteiger has found himself frozen out of first-team action at Old Trafford since the arrival of Mourinho. The 2014 World Cup winner remains on enormous wages, and the club must do all they can to offload him and end his massive deal early.

Many clubs would surely be interested in signing Schweinsteiger given his global appeal, and with the enormous sums of money in Major League Soccer, the Chinese Super League and the Middle East, he could get one last big pay-day.

It's a no-brainer for Mourinho this winter, so long as 'Schweini' is willing to leave football at the highest level behind.

Memphis Depay

Depay's move to Man United has been a disaster. Dubbed the 'new Cristiano Ronaldo' by some after his heroics for PSV Eindhoven, the Netherlands star has been more Alfonso Alves than Luis Suarez since switching to England from the Eredivisie.

With a grand total of 20 minutes of Premeir League football under his belt so far since Mourinho's arrival, it's clear he has no future at the club, so moving him on before his value tumbles too much makes sense. There will be teams from mainland Europe falling over themselves to get a player who has such potential, surely?

Marouane Fellaini

Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini is probably one of the most disliked players ever to represent the Red Devils.

Regularly booed by his own supporters, Fellaini's time in Manchester surely must come to an end in the coming months regardless of his long-lasting appeal to managers.

The ex-Everton man is clumsy on the ball and offers little more than physcial presence, but maybe in a team where the demands aren't so great he could shine, though.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Despite a £19m offer from Everton, Man United are digging their heels in in regards Schneiderlin. The Frenchman, though, has made just three eleague appearances this term (all as a substitute) and with a midfield balance having been striuck with Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Paul Pogba, the door for his return to the starting XI looks firmly closed.

A compromise must be strick, and that is likely to result in him moving on before the window closes.

Sergio Romero

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero

When you consider the back-up goalkeepers Mourinho has had during his managerial career - Carlo Cudicini, Diego Lopez, Asmir Begovic to name a few - Romero isn't up to the required standard.

Man United's ambitions are far greater than Romero's ability and Mourinho must sell the Argentine goalkeeper and either use a youth shot-stopper or sign an adequate number two to David De Gea.
