FIVE players that could follow Marcos Rojo to Man United

Manchester United recently completed the signing of Marcos Rojo from Sporting, with the Argentine set to feature as the team’s left-sided centre-back in a back three.

It’s the third major signing for the club this summer, though United remain worryingly short of quality in other areas of the pitch. There may only be a little over a week left in the window, but United’s business should be far from over.

The club lost their season opener at home to Swansea, which illustrated just how short of options Louis van Gaal is. Ed Woodward will undoubtedly be firmly in the line of fire if he fails to produce on the transfer front in the coming week.

Here’s a look at five players that could follow Rojo to United between now and the end of the window.

Daley Blind

Daley Blind

Man United may have already signed Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw this summer, but an arrival of Daley Blind would see the Dutch international fill in at defensive midfield, where the club are notably light of quality.

Blind has impressed for both club and country over the past year and looks more than capable of stepping up to a club with the demands of Manchester United. With Ander Herrera already on board, Blind would be the perfect partner for the Spaniard in the centre of midfield.

Angel Di Maria

Angel Di Maria’s future has been a major topic of discussion over the last few days, with the Argentine rejecting a new contract offer from Real Madrid, but the club yet to come to an agreement on a sale of the midfielder.

PSG have been regularly linked with a move for Di Maria but have been hamstrung by UEFA and FFP. Manchester United, however, have no such limitations and could do with Di Maria as a means to boost morale at the club.

It’s difficult to see at this time how the Argentine would fit in at Old Trafford, with the club not short of attacking quality. But United is a possible destination for the player, and one that could materialise in a move in the coming days.

Sami Khedira

Sami Khedira

Like Angel Di Maria, Sami Khedira’s future it yet to be resolved, though it is more likely the German will move on from Real Madrid than stay.

But United have surprisingly been absent from the discussion on Khedira’s future. It’s surprising because the German international would represent the ideal signing for one of the midfield positions at Old Trafford, able to play at both ends of the pitch in Louis van Gaal’s system.

Real Madrid will reportedly allow Khedira to leave for a knockdown price this summer, and there’s no reason United shouldn’t make a strong move to secure the services of the all-action midfielder.

Jordy Clasie

Jordy Clasie

It was thought Jordy Clasie had secured a move to Porto, but as yet the Dutch international remains at Feyenoord.

Manchester United were linked with a move for the midfielder earlier in the summer but declined to make a move. What has been clear from United’s opening game against Swansea is that the team severely lack quality in depth in the centre of the pitch. The numbers are there, but none beyond Ander Herrera provide sufficient quality for a club of the size of United.

Clasie is evidently available and won’t add a major dent in the budget. He’s not quite ready to be a regular starter, but his addition will help ensure United have better options than they currently do.

Juan Cuadrado

Both Barcelona and  Manchester United have been chasing Juan Cuadrado’s signature for much of the summer, but as yet, Fiorentina have held firm in their attempts to hang on to the Colombian international.

Cuadrado would make a lot of sense as a signing for United, able to play at both right wing-back and further forward in an attacking three. The Colombian really impressed last season in Serie A and would add a lot of quality to United’s front line, which notably lacks direct wide players.

The club would certainly have to break the bank for Cuadrado, but he’d prove worth it in the long run.
